Shortlist New Geneco Fair Practice Award 2023 announced

With the presentation of the Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award, Nieuw Geneco focuses attention on fair practice, fee guidelines and good commissioning in new music. Good examples are honored. The award ceremony will take place on Friday 8 September 2023, 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm in De Punt, TivoliVredenburg Utrecht – during the Gaudeamus Muziekweek.

The prize is awarded for the 4th time this year. Composers of Nieuw Geneco have made a motivated nomination, based on their recent experiences and tested against the Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Code. The jury selected eight exemplary clients from these nominations.

The shortlist consists of both large and small organizations, amateur musicians and professionals with both private and government funding. Each and every one of these parties, regardless of their organizational form or size, cherish good commissioning practices. Each in their own way, they make an important contribution to a healthy, sustainable and vibrant musical ecosystem.

The 8 nominees for the Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award 2023 are:

• Calefax Reed Quintet, Amsterdam
• Ensemble Black Pencil, Almere
• Ensemble Nieuw Amsterdams Peil, Amsterdam
• Festival November Music, Den Bosch
• Chamber choir JIP, Utrecht
• Chamber choir La Rosa, Utrecht
• Chamber choir Musica Vocale, Wageningen
• Private client Jeroen Vos, Breda

The jury consists of Karmit Fadael (composer, board member and chairman Nieuw Geneco Young), David Dramm (composer) and Davo van Peursen (director of Donemus Publishing).

The jury uses the following criteria in the selection:

• fair compensation for composition assignments
• respecting the rights
• clear communication and agreements
• free artistic space for composers
• sustainable development of audience, repertoire and performance opportunities
• special impact on Dutch musical life and composers
