Minister Rianne Letschert receives musical mandate from BumaStemra and New Music NOW

New government gets musical start with 'Aan de slag'

On the day of her inauguration, Rianne Letschert, the new Minister of Education, Culture and Science, received a musical mandate. The mandate is a translation of the coalition agreement Aan de slag (Let’s get to work), specially composed by Composer of the Netherlands Camiel Jansen. Camiel Jansen collaborated with the Maat Saxophone Quartet and singer Hanneke Last.

The initiative for the mandate came from BumaStemra and New Music NOW. With this composition, the organisations want to mark the start of the new government with a musical moment and show how music can connect people. The musical mandate is a positive gesture from the Dutch music sector.

Karin de Groot, CEO of BumaStemra: ‘We represent thousands of music makers. Through their music, they express what is happening in the Netherlands. A new government is one such moment. That is why we wanted to make a musical gesture.’ Esther Gottschalk, director of New Music NOW, adds: ‘Music connects, inspires and sets the tone. And what better tone to set on your first day at work than a positive one?’

‘This piece is a gift to the new government and to Minister Letschert, but it is also a starting signal. A starting signal for a society in which we can find each other again. The attentive listener will recognise a familiar melody of togetherness. This makes the piece a musical mandate as well,’ says Camiel Jansen, Composer of the Netherlands.

BumaStemra serves music makers who create a world full of music and monitors the use of music. It ensures that composers, lyricists and publishers receive the highest possible and appropriate remuneration for the use of their music in a sustainable and timely manner.
