New Music NOW launches Dutch Composers Day

On Saturday 18 June 2022 New Music NOW launches the first Dutch Composers Day. Compositions of Dutch composers will be heard throughout the country: not only in concert halls and theatres, but also from bell towers, on the street and in living rooms. At the central festival hub in Utrecht, a pop-up event takes place, there will be talk shows and concerts, public radio broadcasts live from TivoliVredenburg Utrecht and New Music NOW streams the whole day.
Music festival
During the Dutch Composers Day, live programmes take place across the country featuring composers – from intimate living room concerts to large-scale music events. The Dutch Composers Day celebrates the vitality and colourfulness of living composers in all their facets. Dozens of venues, nine festivals and 25 ensembles from different regions participate in the Dutch Composers Day. Together with the composers they form a broad network under the flag of New Music NOW. Each organisation presents a festive programme in its own city or region with already 80 composers booked.
Biggest Graphic Score
As a central pop-upevent, the specially composed Greatest Graphic Score of All Time will be rolled out, from Utrecht Central Station, via shopping mall Hoog Catharijne, to concerthall TivoliVredenburg, created by hundreds of composers and played by a colourful procession of children, musicians and passers-by, led by Martin Fondse, the Laureate Composer of the Netherlands.
Concerts, talkshows, radio and livestreams
From the central festival hub TivoliVredenburg Utrecht, public concerts and talk shows take place, presented by composer-presenters.
All day long, radio, TV and online channels will be dedicated to living Dutch composers and their works. Radio 4 broadcasts live from TivoliVredenburg, with concert recordings, live impressions and reports. All concerts will be livestreamed by New Music NOW.
New Music NOW is the online festival hub. Here you can find the timetable for the wide range of programmes that take place throughout the country. New Music NOW coordinates the music network, the platform and the collective promotion.
First edition
The occasion is the 111th anniversary of the Genootschap Nederlandse Componisten (Nieuw Geneco – Dutch Composers’ Association) and the brand new cooperation of a wide range of network partners in new music, under the flag of New Music NOW. The first edition will take place in 2022. It will be an annual event with a national spread and a very diverse range of musical styles. A feast of inspiration and discovery.
